Wisconsin electrical union highlights demand for skilled workers
Union says apprentices can earn near $80,000 a year out of high school
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) — Electrical Workers Union IBEW Local 158 in Green Bay says Wisconsin needs more electricians, and officials say the career benefits both the state and workers who enter the trade.
The union says it is a good career option for young people. Depending on certification, workers can sometimes earn close to $80,000 a year fresh out of high school, according to the union.
“Our apprenticeship programs give young people the opportunity to earn while they learn with scheduled wage increases as they complete their required training and work hours,” said Scott Evenstad, with IBEW Local 158 Membership Development.
Industry outlook
The field of electrical line work is described as tough, risky and lucrative. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the country is expected to have 13,600 worker jobs between 2025 and 2035, including 240 job openings per year in Wisconsin.
IBEW Local 158 says it’s something a lot of people should consider.
“Part of being in the IBW means having a union that negotiates your wages, health coverage, and retirement benefits. For example, right now, a first-year apprentice total wage compensation per hour is at $37.58,” Evanstad said.
Union perspective
He said homes, schools, hospitals and businesses all depend on safe, reliable electricity.
“Our union and our apprenticeship programs are the supporter of providing skilled licensed electricians to our community, to our area,” Evenstad said. “We believe the people doing the essential work deserve fair wages and benefits and respect that on the job.”
