GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX/Gray News) - A high school basketball player in Mississippi was allegedly shot and killed following a fight with a 14-year-old, according to authorities.

Deputies were called to the 13000 block of Robindale Road following reports of gunfire.

When officials arrived, they found a 16-year-old, later identified as Charlie “CJ” Fairley, in the street with a gunshot wound in his abdomen, WLOX reported.

He was airlifted to a hospital where he later died from his injury.

Investigators revealed that Fairley was shot after a fistfight between him and the suspect.

Family and friends said Fairley had a personality that was always positive and a talented basketball player.

“He had a smile that would light up the room. This is a hard one,” Coach Javoris said.

“CJ was always there for you and was just a good friend. We miss him and we wish he was here with us,” one of CJ’s friends said.

The 14-year-old was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

The teen is being held on a $1,000,000 bond.
