Winnebago County board begins budget discussions
County executive cites housing costs, tornado damage as challenges
OSHKOSH, Wis. (WBAY) — The Winnebago County Board began discussions on next year’s budget Monday night.
County Executive Gordon Hintz said the county faces a challenge with the cost of new housing. He said the problem was made worse after July’s EF-3 tornado caused millions of dollars in damage to hundreds of homes.
Hintz said the county needs resources for rental assistance and for making housing affordable for more people.
“We continue to be challenged by a growing homeless population where the unhoused have been priced out of a lot of places, and the county is playing a bigger role in terms of providing services,” Hintz said.
The board is scheduled to continue discussing the budget Tuesday before potentially voting to approve it.
