GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) — Several Labor Day festivals and parades are taking place across northeast Wisconsin Monday, while holiday travelers face heavy road and airport traffic as they return home.

Greater Green Bay Labor Council picnic

The Greater Green Bay Labor Council is holding its annual family picnic at Bay Beach, bringing together local unions, families and community leaders to celebrate the workforce.

The picnic starts at 11 a.m. with a VFW honor guard tribute, followed by opening remarks at 11:30 a.m. The event includes kids’ games, hourly raffles and ongoing bingo games.

All proceeds from ticket sales and raffles will be donated directly to local shelters and food pantries.

Fox Valley Labor Day Parade and Labor Fest

The 43rd annual Labor Day Parade and Labor Fest is also taking place Monday in the Fox Valley.

The parade route starts at Curtis Reed Square in Menasha at 10 a.m. and ends at the Neenah Labor Temple, where Labor Fest will begin. The free community event features a corn roast, live music and family activities.

Donation stations at the event will support Fox Valley tornado relief efforts, with proceeds benefiting St. Joseph’s Food Pantry and Volunteer Fox Cities.

Heaviest traffic expected midafternoon

Many Wisconsin drivers are expected to be traveling back Monday from Labor Day holiday trips. AAA predicts the most congested time on the roads will be between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Drivers should aim to hit the road before noon to avoid the heaviest traffic delays. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation recommends checking its 511 app for road closures, traffic delays and other conditions before driving home today.

Drivers are also urged to use caution in construction zones. Crews stopped working on Saturday, but the DOT says lower speed limits of 55 or 60 mph in those zones still apply even when no workers are present.

Tow to Go available for impaired drivers

To prevent impaired driving, AAA’s Tow to Go program will remain available for drivers in Wisconsin through 6 a.m. Tuesday.

The service provides a free, confidential ride and tow home for impaired drivers and their vehicles within a 10-mile radius. To use the service, call 1-855-286-9246 (1-855-TOW-2-GO).

Crowded terminals expected for holiday flights

Travelers flying back to Wisconsin on Labor Day should prepare for crowded terminals. TSA officials say Monday is a major return day, capping off a holiday weekend in which a record 17 million people nationwide were expected to fly.

Officials recommend arriving at the airport at least two hours early and checking flight status on the airline’s app.
