Memorial Day events happening across northeast Wisconsin
Multiple ceremonies planned Monday to honor fallen service members
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) — Monday marks Memorial Day, a day where we honor men and women in the U.S. military who died while serving our country.
Events are happening all across the country, including here in our area. Ceremonies and events are presented chronologically.
Wreath laying and parade
There will be a wreath laying ceremony at the waterfront in downtown Menasha at 8 a.m.
It’s followed by a parade to Oakhill Cemetery in Neenah. Police recommend paradegoers watch from the west side of Washington St. for the best view.
A ceremony will be held in the military section of the cemetery, concluding with a rifle salute and Taps. The Neenah High School Band provides music.
Memorial Day continues with a car show at Lucky Dogz on Green Bay Rd. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m..
Appleton Memorial Day parade
The parade begins at 9 a.m. at the corner of College Ave. and Appleton St., heads east on College Ave. to Meade St., turns north on Meade to Pacific St., then east on Pacific to Owaissa St.
A Moment of Remembrance ceremony immediately follows the parade at Riverside Cemetery at the George D. Eggleston GAR monument.
A second, shorter ceremony follows the remembrance at the Appleton American Legon Post No. 38 plot at the entrance of St. Joseph Cemetery, within Riverside Cemetery.
Speakers include local high school students as well as city officials and the Post 38 chaplain. Patriotic music from the Appleton City Band, MacDowell Male Chorus and bagpiper Wayne Hietpas.
De Pere Memorial Day parade
The Kiwanis Club of De Pere’s annual Memorial Day parade is Monday morning.
It’s a tradition in the community since 1954.
Veterans, marching bands, local organizations and families will gather to pay tribute to fallen service members.
The parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday morning at the corner of 6th and Grant streets near West De Pere High School and ends at the Kress Library near Voyageur Park.
Wrightstown parade
The Wrightstown Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony starts at 2 p.m. near Highway 96 proceeding to the Urban Klister American Legion Post 436.
It’s followed by a formal ceremony honoring service members.
Fleet Farm Taps Across America
Fleet Farm stores will honor fallen soldiers by participating in Taps Across America on Memorial Day.
Organizers say there will be a brief ceremony at those stores at 2:50 p.m. in honor of America’s 250th birthday this year.
This ceremony will include a minute of silence followed by a live bugler sounding Taps at 3 p.m.
Kohler Memorial Day ceremony
Greenlawn Memorial Park, 6706 Superior Ave., in Kohler plans one of the largest Memorial Day ceremonies in Wisconsin with VFW Sheboygan Memorial Post 9156 and the Ballhorn Chapels and Zimmer-Westview funeral and cremation care centers.
The somber remembrance honors service members killed in the line of duty and includes a roll call of veterans who died recently. The ceremony includes Taps and a 21-gun salute followed by a red poppy seed giveaway and poppy pin sale supporting the VFW and a Johnsonville brat fry.
Speakers include U.S. Army veteran Samantha Chapa, an advanced practice social worker and substance abuse counselor; U.S. Air Force veteran Holly Reiss, funeral director for Ballhorn and Zimmer-Westview; and Larry Michael, senior vice president of operations for Memorial Planning.
It’s a free event open to everyone.
Green Bay United Patriotic Society ceremony
The United Patriotic Society of Green Bay will present its annual Memorial Day ceremony at Admiral Flatley Park in remembrance of those heroes.
This year’s event will feature remarks from community leaders and veterans attending the event.
Local Legion posts will also toss wreaths into the Fox River and an honor rifle guard will fire volleys in the air.
It’s set to begin Monday afternoon at 4 p.m.
