GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - An elite group of jazz musicians from Green Bay’s four high schools gets an opportunity to perform for education leaders at a state convention in Milwaukee.

The Green Bay Jazz All-Stars is a new ensemble with the top student jazz musicians from the district.

It was one of only four groups chosen to perform at the state education convention.

This is the group’s first full school year. It was initially formed to perform at a retirement dinner for teachers in the district last year, but they decided to continue practicing and performing together this year.

“They put in a lot of dedication. We only have four rehearsals before our first performance, so most of the time they have to practice their music on their own,” Andrew Bader, the jazz and orchestra director at Preble High School, said.

Students say they’re thrilled about the chance to showcase their skills and the importance of music education.

“Initially I was like, whoa, that’s kind of cool, and the fact that we’re the only jazz group I was like, man, this must be an important convention. So I thought it was pretty cool. Amazing opportunity. More representation in the jazz world,” Preble High School student Byron Headley said.

The Green Bay Jazz All-Stars performs in Milwaukee on Friday.

They have the superintendent’s permission to travel and perform there with the frigid weather.

If you’d like to see the All-Stars perform, you can catch them at the Tarlton Theater on downtown Green Bay’s west side on Feb. 12.
