MIDDLEFIELD, Ohio (WBAY) - A First Alert for cheese lovers: A major recall is underway across four states, including Wisconsin.

Middlefield Original Cheese Co-op is recalling multiple cheese products because they might be contaminated with listeria.

The cheese is sold through distributors and dining halls, according to the FDA.

The recall includes organic gouda, cheddar, Swiss, pepper jack, Monterey jack, mozzarella-provolone blends, and Sunrise Creamery’s Dilly Pickle Monterey Jack. You can find all of the cheeses and sizes listed on the FDA recall website.

The recall includes both cheese blocks and shredded varieties.

They were sold in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio and Texas between July 7 and August 14.

The FDA says you should throw out the cheese or return it to the store for a refund.

Testing by the company found Listeria monocytogenes on surfaces of cutting equipment and in finished product.

No one reported getting sick in connection with the recalled cheese, but symptoms can take anywhere from 2 days to 6 weeks to appear and may not be associated with the cheese.

Symptoms include flu-like symptoms: fever, nausea, diarrhea, muscle aches and fatigue. As symptoms progress they can lead to headaches, stiff neck, loss of balance, confusion, seizures and paralysis.

Health officials say listeria is especially dangerous if you’re pregnant. Listeria can lead to miscarriage, premature birth, or infect the newborn. It’s harmful to newborns, as well as older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

If you feel sick, see a doctor.
