MENASHA, Wis. (WBAY) - Members from all branches of the military gathered in Menasha to celebrate Armed Forces Day on Saturday.

It’s a national holiday that started nearly 75 years ago, recognizing the dedication and sacrifice our troops make by serving in the military.

VFW Post 2126 continues to honor our brave men and women every year with a special ceremony at Smith Park.

The moment highlights how all branches of the military are unified, thus replacing Army, Navy, and Air Force Day.

All of whom choose to dedicate their life to fighting for one common goal: our freedom.

David Mix, the commander of VFW Post 2126, shared why this moment is important for veterans and why it should continue.

“We really enjoy the spot of having all the flags go up at one time. It really makes us feel good. and it lets people know that there’s more than one branch. There are a lot of other people who are serving in the United States,” said Mix.

This holiday was first celebrated on May 20th, 1950, by then-Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson, and it’s a part of National Military Appreciation Month.
