SUAMICO, Wis. (WBAY) - The NEW Zoo sadly announced the passing of one of its lions.

It says the lioness Ajia was helped to pass peacefully on Monday. She was suffering from age-related issues.

Ajia was 20 years old and was one of the oldest lionesses in humane. Lions in the wild have a life expectancy of 10 to 14 years.

“Her long lifespan is a testament to our team’s dedication to her wellbeing. Ajia will be deeply missed by staff and volunteers, and by the many zoo guests who have gotten to know her over the 18-plus years that she’s been with us,” zoo director Carmen Murach said in a statement.

Ajia became part of the NEW Zoo in May 2006. Two years later she mothered three cubs, which were eventually transferred to other accredited zoos.

The zoo said their resident lion, Loid, had a strong bond with Ajia. The zoo is providing him with additional toys and treats to keep him busy and will be watching him closely.

”It’s quiet at the zoo this time of year, and Loid has always loved watching people. Every zoo guest these days will make a difference for him," Murach said.
