Green Bay Public Market holds groundbreaking, likely to open in summer
GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Construction on the Green Bay Public Market on Broadway started in earnest Tuesday with a formal groundbreaking ceremony.
The Green Bay Public Market is transforming the old Fort Square Building. When finished, it’s expected to have at least 20 vendors, ranging from cheese to wine to fish.
On Broadway Inc. president/CEO Brian Johnson says the Green Bay Public Market will likely open next summer. There were hopes of opening in time for the NFL Draft.
The project has been in the works for several years and now begins the most intensive phase.
“All that work has been really critical to bringing us to today, which I hope and believe will really be a milestone achievement for On Broadway and Green Bay for going forward, for decades to come,” Mayor Eric Genrich said at the ceremony.
This is going to be a major addition to the area that’s expected to bring something new to the community.
It‘s right in the area where the Farmers Market on Broadway happens and near many local businesses.
It’s expected to be a major attraction in the downtown area in its own right, attracting about 1 million customers every year, a mix of locals and tourists.
“When people come here, it’s just going to add more of a relaxed and open feel, and small business is one of the big parts of Green Bay and especially this part. We can’t lose that,” Caleb Nordhaugen of Green Bay said.
Brian Johnson, president and CEO of On Broadway Inc., says he anticipates the public market will trigger even more development in the area.
“We know this will have a ripple effect, a positive impact on businesses nearby, and will serve as a catalyst for additional development in the area that we’ve mass modeled. Other vacant sites around the public market we’ve estimated up to $100 million in new development will likely occur as a result of this project.”
The city of Green Bay is addressing parking for the market. They’ve got a proposal out now to developers to address the concerns for the downtown area.
