One hurt in Oshkosh apartment fire
OSHKOSH, Wis. (WBAY) - One person was hurt in an apartment fire in Oshkosh Wednesday morning.
Dispatchers were told there was black smoke and fire alarms were going off at the apartments on the 1700-block of Taft Ave. at 7 a.m.
Fifteen units were evacuated.
The victim is a woman who lives in the apartment where the fire started. A maintenance supervisor and another tenant pulled her out.
“The same individuals who were able to get the victim out of the fire were able direct us to the location of the fire, which can sometimes be hard to find because of the heavy smoke,” Assistant Fire Chief Greg Stelter said, “so we were able to get a very quick attack on the fire when the fire company showed up and they were able to get a quick knockdown.“
The woman was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation. We don’t know her condition, but the fire department says she’ll recover.
A few other residents were checked for smoke inhalation at the scene but no others were transported.
The fire was contained to the apartment where it started but there was minor damage to the apartment above it. Those two units are uninhabitable for now, we’re told.
Half of the tenants who were evacuated have been allowed back into the building at the time of this writing.
What started the fire is still under investigation.
