GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Green Bay Packers General Manager Brian Gutekunst used both of the team's first round draft picks to bolster Defensive Coordinator Mike Pettine's defense.
Gutekunst selected Michigan defensive end Rashan Gary with the 12th overall pick in the first round. The team said after the pick that Gary would likely start with the team's outside linebacker group.
Gutekunst then traded the 30th overall pick along with two 4th rounders (#114 and #118) to the Seattle Seahawks to move into the no. 21 pick.
With the 21st pick, the Packers picked safety Darnell Savage from Maryland. Savage ran a blazing 4.36 forty-yard dash at the NFL Combine.
On day 2 of the draft, the Packers selected Elgton Jenkins, a center from Mississippi State.
Jenkins started 13 games at center in his senior season but has versatility. He started 26 games at center, five at left tackle, two at left guard and one at right tackle during his college career.
The Packers said following the pick they plan on moving him immediately to guard.
"I feel like I'm quick with my feet. I can move people off the ball and things like this. I feel like I'm a real good fit," Jenkins said in a phone call after he was selected.
Jenkins has good size at 6-foot-4 and 310 pounds. He posted 29 reps in the bench press which was tied for sixth best at the NFL Combine.
"When you watch him he's got everything in his body. If he wants to be dominant -- if he wants to control guys he can do it. He does it on a consistent basis. He's powerful. We think he can control the line of scrimmage," Packers scout Charles Walls said.
With the 75th pick overall, the Packers chose Tight End Jace Sternberger.
Sternberger is said to be a talented route-runner with no wasted steps and good route speed. He made an immediate impact at Texas A&M.
With just one year with the Aggies, Sternberger became a consensus All-American, first-team All-SEC recording 48 receptions, 832 yards and 10 touchdowns in 13 games.
