INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WBAY) - When the NFL Scouting Combine concludes here, the next big date on the NFL calendar will be March 12. At 3 o'clock on the day teams can begin talking to potential veteran free agents. Packers GM Brian Gutekunst reiterated in Indy on Wednesday that he plans on doing a lot of talking.
“We'd like to be aggressive and be in every conversation,” Gutekunst said. “Now whether that leads to us signing a bunch (of outside free agents) or not remains to be seen.”
“We (coaches) have pretty much spent our 12 years here focused on improving within,” McCarthy said. “We need outside resources. We have gone back to writing reports on our current roster and writing reports on the potential free agents. The way is formatting and preparing for veteran free agency is different than it has been in the past.”
As it stands right now the Packers would enter free agency with the 26th-most cap space in the NFC. You can always free up cap space by released or restructuring contract of veteran players. Mike McCarthy reiterated today that he believe Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb, potential cap casualties, are still very good players.
