Weather continues to impact high school spring dances

GREEN BAY, Wis. Action 2 News reported Thursday the weather has impacted some high school spring dances, including Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay. The school moved their academy ball to Friday, a day early, hoping to avoid the worst of the weather.

Notre Dame Academy teachers say it's been a hectic last two days, preparing for the dance.

"It was definitely a lot to plan, yesterday was very busy as well as today, a lot of students had to change appointments for hair and nails and rides and where they were going to take pictures and stuff, especially with the weather," said Crystal Dory, Spanish teacher at Notre Dame Academy.

Dory says students were shocked to find out their Academy Ball date had been moved up because of the upcoming storm. The students’ biggest worry was having to take the ACT test Saturday morning.

"This weather is crazy, I can't believe that it's happening, who would think in April that we would have this, it's just nuts, we haven't had this ever for any of the Academy Balls in the past,” said Holly Strong, an English and Social Studies teacher at Notre Dame Academy.

Administrators at Notre Dame Academy say they expect around 330 students to be at Friday’s Academy Ball. They say only a handful of students say they couldn't make it to the dance.

Notre Dame Academy is not the only school to have to reschedule their spring dance, New London High School said Friday afternoon they are rescheduling their Junior Prom to May 5th. New London administrators say there's too much of a risk to student safety with the expected snowfall Saturday.

"If the forecast is correct, the travel conditions will be less than safe we thought for students, particularly for prom they like to drive to The Valley for dinner and photos and other things like that, and we didn't want kids on the road," Dennis Krueger, district administrator for School District of New London.

Notre Dame’s post Academy Ball event was also cancelled Friday, but teachers say moving the date up was a better decision than not having a ball at all.

"There were just too many questions for Saturday, the weather's not the greatest today, but we definitely think having an academy ball versus not having one was the right choice, it's just too memorable of a night to miss out, so we're so happy to be able to move it tonight," added Dory.
