Trees for Troops

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Local tree farmers are bringing Christmas cheer to military families through Trees for Troops.

Trees bundled for delivery

For the 13th year, retailers and more than 400 Christmas tree growers in 29 states are donating live trees, including Whispering Pines tree farmers in Oconto.

They were at Lambeau Field Tuesday morning -- one of three places in the state where FedEx is collecting the trees which it will deliver. Some of the trees collected here are heading to Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

"We can't thank our troops enough for letting us celebrate Christmas and be free the way we are. That's the smallest token you could possibly give them," Dave Vander Velden from Whispering Pines said.

This weekend, Dec. 1-3, you can buy a tree to donate to a military family at Schroeder's Forevergreens, 706 Main St., in Neenah, and write a message on a tag which will stay with the tree.

Last year, more than 17,000 trees were delivered last year to 63 military bases in the U.S. and overseas.

Since 2005, more than 191,000 trees have been delivered.

Trees for Troops is a nationwide program of the National Christmas Tree Association's Christmas SPIRIT Foundation and FedEx.
