MANITOWOC COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) - A 17-year-old passenger in a stolen van was killed during a rollover crash in Manitowoc County early Thursday morning.
The victim was identified as a Sheboygan resident. No name was released.
The driver of the stolen van, a 15-year-old Sheboygan girl, was extracted from the vehicle and taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
A 14-year-old Sheboygan girl was also extracted from the vehicle and hospitalized.
At 1:15 a.m., a Manitowoc County deputy attempted to stop a speeding van on County Highway LS near County Highway X in the Township of Centerville.
The Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office says the driver continued at a high rate of speed.
Moments later, the vehicle lost control after missing a curve in the road south of County Highway X. The van went into a west ditch, overturned and hit a tree.
The 17-year-old boy was ejected from the backseat of the van and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Sheboygan girls were trapped in the vehicle and Jaws of Life were needed to rescue them. They were wearing seat belts, according to investigators.
A preliminary investigation shows the teens had taken the van without the owner's consent.
Speeds reached 80 mph, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The department states that speed and lack of driving experience were factors in the crash.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice is handling the investigation.
