GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – Action 2 News is learning about a growing list of Wisconsin homeowners who thought they were buying extra protection for their appliances but now say they're out hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
When appliances stop working, bills can add up. Some people buy coverage for those things home owners' insurance don't include, but there's a warning about a company selling home warranty plans.
The State Office of the Commissioner of Insurance says complaints are coming in from Wisconsin homeowners who bought plans from a company called "Secure Home Warranty.”
Email offers promising coverage to repair or replace everything from the furnace, sump pump, stove, and many more appliances. One example of an annual contract cost $600 a year. Secure Home Warranty claims "they have the highest level of customer service in the industry.”
However, the Better Business Bureau is hearing the opposite and has posted this online alert and "F" rating, and more than four hundred complaints. The person who filed a complaint says they "called over 50 times but line is always busy. My wife has health issues and a functioning ac unit is absolutely essential."
The BBB said it's trying to get answers.
“We've been working or trying to reach out to the company for more than a year to get them to address the pattern of complaints that we've been receiving, but to date they have not responded to our requests. This particular company "Secure Home Warranty" in Philadelphia is not one the BBB would recommend,” said Susan Bach of the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin.
The Better Business Bureau said there are legitimate companies that sell home warranties, and it's important to research before you sign any contract. The State Office of the Commissioner of Insurance said "Secure Home Warranty" was not licensed to do business in Wisconsin.
If you bought a plan from the company, they want to know to help with the investigation.
