KEWAUNEE, Wis. (WBAY) - The Operation Football game of the week was a good one. A pair of heavyweights from the old Packerland conference (now the Marinette & Oconto, Northern Lakes, Packerland Conference – Large) Kewaunee hosting Southern Door.
The Southern Door Eagles are returning conference champions but the Kewaunee Storm has had a hot start to the season. The Storm came into Friday’s contest in Kewaunee outscoring opponents 119 to 20 but Southern Door has beat them the past four years.
Kewaunee came back from a 14 point deficit to take a fourth quarter 21-20 lead but Southern Door responded with a 79 yard touchdown run from Eagles junior running back Derik LeCaptain. Southern Door punched in a 2-point conversion to take a 28-21 lead.
Kewaunee then responded with a touchdown of their own and decided to roll the dice and decided to go for the 2-point conversion but Derik LeCaptain intercepted the pass. Kewaunee tried an onside kick but Southern Door recovered the ball. The Eagles then kneeled it to end the game, 28-27.
“I swear to god truth on this two years ago when we played Kewaunee I dreamed that we won on a play just like that and I swear on my life to that and it’s so overwhelming right now I can’t believe it,” LeCaptain said.
“Derik (LeCaptain) is just a quality football player and a quality kid offensively I could start him at all 11 positions,” Southern Door Head Coach Pat McCarty said. “He’s just that talented and that versatile.”
Southern Door (3-1, 2-0 MONLP-Large) remains on top of the conference with Peshtigo (2-2, 2-0 MONLP-Large).
Southern Door will face Algoma (0-4, 0-2 MONLP-Large) next week.
