Silver Alert subject found safe in Manitowoc County

WHITELAW, Wis. (WBAY) - The subject of a Silver Alert was found safe in Manitowoc County Friday night, almost 14 hours after he left home in southern Wisconsin.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office says Richard Benz's son-in-law was driving around Manitowoc County after the man's cell phone was traced to within 7 miles of a cell phone tower in Whitelaw at 6 p.m.

After finding Benz, the Manitowoc County Sheriff's Office made sure Benz was OK.

Authorities say Benz left his home in Richfield, in Washington County, at 7 a.m. to go to a gym in Pewaukee.

Around noon, the family contacted him. Benz told them he was lost. He said he could see highways 23, 51 and County M, which would have put him in Packwaukee, in Marquette County.

His cell phone pinged a tower in Whitelaw six hours later.
