The Winnebago County Sheriff's Office says "early ice is unsafe and unforgiving" -- after an SUV broke through the ice on Lake Butte des Morts Tuesday afternoon.

The SUV ended up with its front wheels completely submerged. Deputies say the driver is OK and gave permission to use photos of the mishap as a warning to other ice motorists to use extreme caution.

"We know there are many of you out there... and we know most of you out there will be just fine. Ice thickness is varying right now, and it can be deceiving with the fresh snow," the sheriff's office said in a statement on Facebook. "It's not worth the risk if you are not certain."
