GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) -- Many lawmakers and political groups are reacting to President Donald Trump's pick for United States Supreme Court.

On Monday, Trump picked Judge Brett Kavanaugh to take the place of retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the high court.

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker weighed in on Monday saying in part:

"I believe he fits the criteria I look for in a judicial candidates which is: a man or woman of integrity, a person who has a solid understanding of the law, and a person who understands that the role of the judiciary is to uphold the Constitution regardless of one's personal or political beliefs."

Senator Tammy Baldwin:

"People need an independent justice who will not overturn the law of the land on women’s health, health care for people with pre-existing conditions, and the constitutional rights and freedoms of all Americans. The stakes are very high for the American people and these are the things that I will be looking for as I review the nomination.”

"A Supreme Court justice ought to be a judge, not a superlegislator - applying the Constitution as written, not altering it to reach a result. President Trump nominated a person who fit that description in Justice Neil Gorsuch last year, and to my understanding, Judge Brett Kavanaugh fits it as well," said Sen. Ron Johnson in a statement. "I look forward to meeting with Judge Kavanaugh and the Senate moving expeditiously through the confirmation process."

"I think that Senator Johnson and Senator Baldwin are going to be hearing from Wisconsinites especially Democrats who are going to say this is what's important to us in Wisconsin," said Lee Snodgrass, Chair of the Democratic Party of Outagamie County. "These are the civil liberties and the freedoms for Wisconsinites and people throughout the United States and I think they're going to be asking some hard questions, or at least they should be."

Republican National Committee:

"Tonight, President Trump nominated a strong defender of the Constitution and champion of the rule of law to the Supreme Court," said Chairwoman McDaniel. "Judge Brett Kavanaugh has proven his commitment to protecting the rights of all Americans through a distinguished career on the D.C. Circuit and his lasting service to our nation. Judge Kavanaugh is the best choice to succeed Justice Anthony Kennedy and Senate Democrats must put partisan politics aside and vote to confirm him to the Supreme Court."

"He's highly qualified, Yale Law School grad, top of his class," said Jerry Murphy, of the Outagamie So based on qualifications okay, I believe they should vote to confirm and by the way I might add, I believe he will be confirmed. This judge will be confirmed."

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin:

“The next Supreme Court Justice will determine the course of our history, and the course of countless women’s lives. Any nominee who does not believe that a woman should be able to make her own health care decisions disagrees with the vast majority of people in this country and is not qualified to serve as a Justice on the Supreme Court.

“We urge the Senate to take their confirmation duties seriously. You’ll be hearing from us.”
