Police: Smoke the Ashwaubenon Turkey not in custody

A turkey that's become a mascot for an Ashwaubenon neighborhood remains on the loose.

On Monday, a Facebook page dedicated to Smoke the Turkey lit up with reports that the bird had been captured by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Ashwaubenon Public Safety tells Action 2 News that Smoke was not taken into custody. The DNR and Ashwaubenon's animal control were out Monday morning, but they were unable to round up the unusual suspect.

Smoke has ruffled some feathers in the village by chasing cars and bikes. He's been known to run into traffic.

Ashwaubenon Public Safety asked people to stop feeding Smoke out of concern for his safety.

Smoke does have a dedicated following. The Smoked Turkey - Mayor of Ashwaubenon page is regularly updated with photos and videos of Smoke sightings.
