(WBAY) - It may seem obvious, but public health officials are having to warm people about the dangers of consuming laundry detergent pods.

The new warning comes as teenagers take to the internet for the Tide Pod Challenge. The "challenge" is to bite or eat the pod.

Doctors say chemicals inside laundry detergent pods can burn your mouth. lips, and esophagus.

The American Associations of Poison Control Centers says there's been a steep spike in teens misusing the laundry pods. The year is young, but the AAPCC has already received 40 reports of teens misusing the pods.

The Fond du Lac Fire Department took to Facebook to deliver this message to parents:

"Parents talk to your kids and make sure they are crystal clear of the dangers posed by detergent pods. The only place they belong is in the clothes washer," reads the post.

Poison Control also reminds parents to keep the pods out of reach of small children, who have been known to confuse the colorful pods for food or candy.
