This time of year, Ardy & Ed’s Drive In doesn’t see much action. That is, unless you’re watching the Travel Channel.

This past week, the famous drive in made its way onto a “Retro Eats” segment, filmed at the restaurant in August 2017.

“We thought they did a great job on the filming of it, both with us and with the customers,” says Steve Davis, co-owner of Ardy & Ed’s Drive In. “They were really great to work with.”

Davis says production crews filmed at the restaurant for eight hours, documenting the ins and outs of the timeless drive-in.

“It really looks almost exactly the way it did when it first opened in the late 40's,” Davis says of the restaurant. “We've had to update equipment, and update menu items and things through the years, but the basic things that … most people can come and still have something that they would have had in 1950 if they came out.”

“Continuing something that I really never could have imagined when I started back in the 1960's, that this would happen, that it would become this popular and this fun for people to do,” says Ardy Davis, co-owner of Ardy & Ed’s Drive In.

For the Davis family, it’s that family-friendly mantra that is translated onto the small screen.

“When we're doing what we do every day, you look out, and it's really about smiles. And that comes through pretty clearly in this episode also,” Steve Davis says. “When they show the people, the people are smiling. And that's what we like to think is the biggest thing we provide, other than great root beer and food.”

The “Retro Eats” episode featuring Ardy & Ed’s Drive in will air again, on Monday January 8 at 8:30 on the Cooking Channel.

Ardy & Ed’s Drive In first opened in 1948, then known as the Southside A & W Restaurant. In 1960, Ardy and her late husband Ed Timm purchased the restaurant, eventually renaming it Ardy & Ed’s Drive In in 1972.

After Ed Timm’s death in 1979, Ardy continued to run the restaurant – eventually marrying co-worker Steve Davis.

Today, Steve and Ardy Davis co-own and operate Ardy & Ed’s Drive in.

The restaurant will open again for the season on March 1, 2018.
