Oconto County man who shot at police gets 15 years in prison

OCONTO, Wis. (WBAY) - A judge in Oconto County sentenced a man to 15 years in prison for shooting at police last March.

Thomas Benser, 51, pleaded no contest in October to three counts of first- and second-degree recklessly endangering safety. Eleven other charges were dismissed.

According to the criminal complaint, Benser threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend. She called 911, and Benser threatened to kill himself and also to "put a bullet into every cop."

Officers responded and say he fired four or five shots at them as they surrounded his home. No one was hit.

Benser will spend another 15 years under extended supervision when he gets out of prison.
