More choices than ever for melting ice

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Local hardware stores have become some of the most popular destinations in the past 48 hours.

"Fog and ice are the things I fear. I don't fear cold or snow. Fog and ice," Mike Henquinet from Green Bay said.

"Not looking forward to the ice. It just makes it a lot more difficult for the business we're in," Paul Anderson from Sobieski said.

Whether it's concern over driving or working, customers at Martin Hardware in Green Bay Thursday shared a common connection.

"It's been a lot of preparing for ice," Martin Hardware owner Katy Martin said.

And now, more than ever, people have choices on how to fight the freezing rain.

Gone are the days of just salt and sand.

Gone are the days of just salt or sand.

"People come in here a lot and they're like, they see all the different kinds of salt we have, and they're like, 'I thought there was only one,' and I'm like, no there's many," Martin said.

"There's eco-friendly, there's more effective ones, there's different types of actual sand now you can throw down, there's acetates, there's chlorides, there's a huge array of stuff you can throw down now," she listed.

Since Wednesday morning, Martin Hardware sold five pallets of ice melting products.

"There are things that are more pet friendly, some things are less pet friendly, some things melt faster, some melt slower, some have more grit, some are more visible that you can see what you're throwing down," Martin continued.

While Martin says ice and snow are good for business, customers say they're getting a little worn out running to the hardware store.

"Spring can't come soon enough," Anderson said.
