KIMBERLY, Wis. (WBAY) - The past three seasons Kaukauna senior Hayley Hestekin and Ghosts have made the WIAA Sectional finals. The past three seasons they have lost in the sectional finals. In her final shot at making it to the State Tournament it was just that, a 2-run shot that helped Kaukauna advance.
Hestekin's 2-run home run in the first inning was the only runs of the game and it shouldn't be short changed that she threw a no-hitter too. Kaukauna finally advanced to the State Tournament in Madison Thursday with a 2-0 win against Pulaski.
"We've been knocking on the door for four years," Kaukauna head coach Tim Roehring said. "We have been sitting there. Sectional final. Sectional final. Sectional final. Finally break through. You couldn't ask for a nicer group of kids. You couldn't ask for a greater kid on the mound. Throwing a no-hitter and jacking a home run in the first inning. That's huge."
Hayley Hestekin and her sister Hannah have been a part of all three of those losses and now finally a sectional final win.
"It's so special I mean the amount of conversations we have had about losing the sectional final game in our household has been unreal so to finally say that we did it's just so awesome," Hestekin said after the game.
Kaukauna will face Oshkosh North in the Division 1 quarterfinals on Thursday, June 8 at Goodman Diamond in Madison. Kaukauna and Oshkosh North, both members of the Fox Valley Association have faced each other twice this season with the Spartans shutting out the Ghosts: 1-0 on April 21 and 5-0 on May 12.
