It's Memorial Day weekend and that means busy highways kick off the road trip season.

42 million Americans are expected to travel at some point this weekend, highest number in 12 years. Nearly a half a million right here in Wisconsin will hit the road this weekend.

AAA says more and more people have been traveling on Memorial Day weekend for the past several years.

Gas prices are up $.50 from this time last year and are the highest overall in about four years.

"It's not deterring anyone from hitting the road. We're still well over a dollar away from the record highs we saw in 2010, 2011. People are able to absorb that cost into their trip budget by stopping at less expensive restaurants or saving money in other ways," said Nicholas Jarmusz, AAA.

AAA says other travel related costs like hotels and car rentals are down, making up for the higher gas prices.
