Green Bay woman accused of theft with fake investment

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – A Green Bay woman is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a local business owner after inviting him to participate in an investment opportunity.

Karen Becker is charged with one count of theft but could face two additional counts of fraud.

According to prosecutors, back in February 2015 the man invested $9,000 into a fund Karen Becker claimed to manage.

In April 2015 he gave her another $6,800 after she said his initial investment was growing.

The next month he decided to withdraw his investment, which he was told was worth more than $34,000.

Becker provided him with a check for that amount, but when he went to cash it, it was returned several days later for insufficient funds.

The man hired an attorney and filed a lawsuit against Becker.

Police filed a search warrant in the case this week, and she appeared in court Wednesday for the first time.

Prosecutors argued her bail should be the amount she owes the businessman: nearly $17,000.

A judge disagreed and set bond at $2,500 cash.
