GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - The Green Bay Metro Fire Department is going "green" to raise awareness about fire safety -- and hopes to stay that way.

Along with the Green Bay International Association of Fire Fighters Local 141, they're carrying on a tradition to hang wreaths outside all of the fire stations.

The wreaths are lit with green bulbs, but every time a station responds to a residential fire this holiday season, one bulb will be changed to red.

Firefighters are doing this to remind the community about fire safety every time they pass a fire station.

The GBMFD says it responds to 10 to 17 residential fires every holiday season, and the most common cause is careless cooking.

The wreaths will be taken down on New Year's Day.
