Green Bay still has sandbags available
Green Bay still has sandbags available for residents who are worried about flooding and want to protect their property.
The city had 10,000 sandbags to give away this week. It will continue distributing sandbags on Tuesdays and Thursdays for the next two weeks, through May 7.
The sandbags will be distributed at 420 S. Broadway between 1 and 4 p.m. each of those days.
People looking for sandbags should bring proper identification to prove they're a Green Bay resident.
Residents can get up to 50 sandbags. They're responsible for loading sandbags into their vehicles or trailers themselves. Each sandbag weighs 40 pounds.
The Fox River and Lake Michigan water levels are near record highs. As a result, so are local rivers and creeks, and a strong northeast wind can cause those waterways to backup and overflow their banks.
"It's critical that people stay in their homes now, especially with the governor's orders. To add that, the flooding issues and the flooding concerns. If we can keep people in their homes and protect their homes a little bit here, it will be a big success for all of us," Police Chief Andrew Smith said.
