Green Bay city council approves funds for sand, pier at Bay Beach
Bringing a sand beach back to Bay Beach has the permits and now it has the money.
The Green Bay City Council approved $5 million in bonding to fund restoring the beach with sand and building a pier.
The vote was 11-1 after the council discussed whether to reduce the bonding amount but decided against it.
Bay Beach was a summer destination for decades, but it was closed due to contamination in the water and more recent generations have grown up with Bay Beach Amusement Park bordered by concrete rubble at the water's edge.
Dredging to remove chemically-contaminated sediment from the adjoining Fox River began almost a decade ago.
Green Bay used grant money to hire a consultant, Patrick Engineering, to design the new beach, a boardwalk, bathhouse, and wildlife viewing platform.
