A 17-year-old girl who died in a freak crash in Little Chute Tuesday night was identified Thursday as Mackenzie Leeman of Neenah.

Fox Valley Metro police say Leeman was driving south on Highway 441 when it appears she went off an overpass and landed on Highway 96 below, just west of French Road.

An online fundraiser has been started for a Mackenzie Jo Leeman Memorial Nursing Scholarship. She was training to become a nurse.

to donate.

Police were called to the crash at 10:24 p.m. The girl was alone in the vehicle under the 441 overpass. She was pronounced dead at the crash scene.

Police believe the weather and road conditions were factors in the crash, not alcohol.

"We've had more storms this year it seems at least within the last couple of weeks. You know, it has been a tough year for crashes and weather," Capt. Jeremy Slotke, Fox Valley Metro P.D., said.

"Our officers worked with notifying her family. Our hearts go out to her family and everybody who knew her. It's truly a tragic incident," he added.

Highway 96 between French Road and Ballard Road, as well as Highway 441 SB between Northland Avenue and College Avenue were closed for hours. The roads reopened to traffic early Wednesday morning.
