Gabriel Lofts to pay homage to building's history in downtown Appleton

APPLETON, Wis. (WBAY) - When one door closes, another one opens. That's true for the Gabriel Furniture building in downtown Appleton.

The store closed in April after nine decades in business at the corner of College Avenue and Morrison Street.

The building won't be vacant for too long. It will transform into the Gabriel Lofts--a mixed-use building with 21 apartments and two commercial spaces for rent.

"The Gabriel Lofts pay homage to the Gabriel Furniture building that has been here for decades, so it's kind of a cool project in that sense," says Chad Doran, City of Appleton.

The plan is to preserve exterior and interior elements of the building, which dates back to 1928.

"That might be one of our top goals. There's a variety of things on the building or inside of the building that we're going to do our best to keep the structural integrity of, and I think that will really add to the character of the building," says Jack Klister, Fore Development + Investment Group.

Fore Development + Investment Group closed on the building this week.

"Ultimately, we're hoping for around a 10-month process depending on this upcoming winter and other factors. We're really aiming for an April or May, later spring move in date for residents," Klister says.

The apartments will offer tenants a choice of studio, one bedroom and two-bedroom.

Doran asks drivers in the area to pay attention to the construction. That includes the removal of the facade and demolition of two buildings next door.

"I think its exciting. Everybody is excited about the project and the potential for people to move downtown. It's great for the other businesses down here, the restaurants, the other shops," Doran says.
