Green Bay Correctional Institution is on lockdown after an assault on a staff member.

It happened Friday morning at about 7:30.

The Wisconsin Department of Corrections says an employee was injured in an inmate-on-staff assault.

The employee received medical attention. No information was released on the severity of the injuries.

The DOC has started an internal investigation.

The Brown County Sheriff's Office will investigate the assault.

The prison was placed on lockdown for purposes of investigation.

The DOC did not release the name of the inmate or the staff member.

Green Bay Correctional Institution is a maximum security prison.

In 2017, Target 2 Investigates uncovered an increase in attacks and assaults on corrections officers.

The Department of Corrections told us last year it made changes like adding cameras and adjusting inmate movement but agreed forced overtime and a shortage of officers were also factors.
