Fond du Lac snaps Kimberly's 70-game win streak
The nation's longest win streak is no more. Kimberly High School had won 70-straight games including five state titles in a row.
That streak ended Friday night against Fond du Lac on a last second 26-yard field goal by senior place kicker Jared Scheberl.
Kimberly trailed 21-14 at halftime but came back to tie the game in the third quarter after a touchdown run by junior running back Will Fischer.
Fond du Lac would respond with a 74 yard scamper by senior quarterback Carson Raddatz. That put the Cardinals up 28-21.
But Kimberly wasn't done.
The Papermakers tied the game back up with less than three minutes to play on a 5-yard TD run by Fischer.
Then it was crunch time for Fondy. In the past Kimberly had been the team with the ball late in the game and finished with a score.
This time it was the Cardinals.
Fond du Lac took its time going down the field taking time off the clock. With one second left Cardinals senior Jared Scherberl made the 25-yard field goal as time expired.
"All those years you were on varsity you know the agony of losing over and over again so I said if it comes down to me I'm going to finish it so that's what I did," Scherberl said after the game.
"It feels good you know I just appreciate that team over there," Fond du Lac Head Coach Steve Jorgensen said. "As many times as they've broke our heart, even in a win I just think unbelievable what has gone over there. I'm just so happy for our guys."
Fond du Lac will host D.C. Everest next week at home while Kimberly travels to Wisconsin Rapids.
