Five-run fourth inning for Athens ends Oakfield's season in D4 State baseball Semifinals

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. (WBAY) - The Oakfield baseball team season came to an end Wednesday afternoon in a 6-3 loss to Athens in the WIAA Division 4 State semifinals.

The Oaks took a lead in the bottom of the first inning on a fielding error off a hit by junior Parker Dietzel. Oakfield scored another run in the second when Athens junior pitcher Marshall Westfall walked in a run to take a 2-0 lead. The inning was halted by a diving catch by Athens junior left fielder Guyler Luther.

The Athens Bluejays scored a run in the third inning when Dakota Willemssen singled to short bringing in Westfall. Then in the fourth the Bluejays scored five runs on two errors to take a four-run lead.

Oakfield senior Joey Ruplinger’s RBI double brought in a run to cut the deficit to three but that’s as close as they would get. Ruplinger was 2 for 4, junior Tyler Franke was 1 for 2 with an RBI and senior DuWayne Balthazor was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

This was the Oaks first trip to state since 1996. Athens advances to the D4 State Championship to face Independence/Gilmanton on Friday, June 15 at 9 a.m.
