Fire captain who stopped to help motorist is killed by suspected drunk driver

MONONA, Wis. (WBAY) - The Lake Mills Fire Department says the Good Samaritan killed by a suspected drunk driver on New Year's Eve was a fire captain.

Our ABC sister station WKOW says the Monona city attorney identified him as Chris Truman, 46 years old, who was with the fire department for more than 13 years.

The Monona Police Department says Truman stopped to help a motorist after a minor crash on the Beltline highway near the Monona Road exit Monday. He got out of his car and was struck. He died later at a hospital.

Police say the driver who hit him, Samuel Patrick Cremers, was arrested on suspicion of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and injury by intoxicated use of a vehicle. He's in the Dane County jail.

The highway was partially closed for three hours.
