Family moves in to Habitat homes built with students' help
A family once living in a two-bedroom trailer now has two new homes thanks to the work of Appleton-area high school students.
The students helped build two houses for Habitat for Humanity, one behind the other, on S. Pierce Ave. in Appleton.
Monday they gave the Martinez family the keys to their new homes.
One is for the majority of the family -- a dad, mom, and two of their daughters. A third daughter, the oldest, will live in the second home.
"It's amazing. All of us are going to have our own bedroom, and we came from a mobile home that had two rooms, so it was pretty crowded," Maria Martinez said.
Retired local educator Mary Beth Nienhaus donated the funding needed for the homes.
