Fake website touts "Bay Port High School Massacre"
A letter sent to parents on Tuesday addresses rumors of a plot for a school shooting and a website titled "Bay Port High School Massacre."
According to the letter, school officials and the sheriff's office were aware of the rumors spreading through social media and student conversations, and officials emphatically say they believe there is no credibility to the threat and no imminent harm to students.
School officials say they'll have a police presence in the high school as a precautionary measure.
"Please feel confident in knowing we, along with the Brown County Sheriff's Department, are aware of the rumors and have the situation under control," Principal Mike Frieder wrote.
The letter indicates the student who created the fake website was not the same student who was the subject of the rumors of planning a shooting.
School officials say they're considering disciplinary measures, including expulsion.
The Brown County Sheriff's Office says numerous interviews and searches have been conducted.
"Despite the fact that no credible threat has been identified, school officials and law enforcement are taking appropriate precautionary and punitive measures to address the original incident as well as the recent information disseminated as a prank," reads a statement from the Sheriff's Office.
