MENASHA, Wis. (WBAY) - Two Menasha police officers narrowly escape being hit by this alleged drunk driver over the weekend. The department shared dashcam video on social media, hoping to educate people about the dangers of drinking and driving.
A car comes toward a Menasha squad car in this Menasha Police dashcam video.
It was around 2:15am Sunday at the intersection of Appleton and Second Streets in Menasha when two officers out on patrol, stopped at a stop sign, and noticed a car coming right at them. The driver blowing a stop sign and almost hitting the squad car, head on.
"Fortunately he had the presence of mind, throwing it in reverse, right before the cars impacted, so there was no crash, they were able to avoid that," says Menasha Police Chief Tim Styka.
But the damage was already done as the driver took off. The officers quickly turning around and following the car until it pulled into a nearby driveway. They found the female driver already out of the car.
The now identified 29 year old woman struggling to follow officers commands. At one arguing with the officers, blaming them for the near miss.
The police chief commends the officer who was driving for his quick thinking to avoid the collision. And he's thankful the squad was in the right place at the right time, catching the suspected drunk driver before she had an opportunity to hurt anyone.
Chief Styka adds, "It serves as that good reminder, that drinking and driving, especially as we get into summertime and summer parties and the 4th of July, where we know a fair amount of drinking goes on, just as a good reminder to people to have a designated driver and be smart."
The woman was taken to the Winnebago County Jail. Officers referred charges for OWI first, possession of marijuana, as well as resisting arrest and battery to a police officer.
