Driver arrested for OWI after Appleton roundabout fail
A driver was arrested for OWI and Reckless Driving after failing the "round" part of an Appleton roundabout.
Appleton Police posted video of it on their Facebook page and Twitter.
to watch the video.
It happened Sunday, March 31, at the roundabout at Northland and Richmond. Video shows the car speeding through the roundabout, sparks flying.
"We're estimating potentially close to 80 miles an hour. Obviously we weren't out there, but you guys could see how fast that vehicle was," Officer Meghan Cash of the Appleton Police Department said.
Police say a sign at the roundabout was damaged, and so was a menu display at the Taco Bell where the driver eventually ended up.
A chunk of the building is missing, too.
The incident happened at 3 a.m.
"Thankfully no one else was injured. Just the driver of the vehicle was injured, but we're very thankful no one was in that drive-thru line at Taco Bell," Cash said.
A manager for the restaurant told Action 2 News she wasn't sure when the drive thru would reopen or how much damage was done dollar-wise.
Brittany Laabs shared photos she took of the damage.
The driver was only identified as a 25-year-old male from Appleton. He was arrested for 1st Offense OWI, Reckless Driving-Endangering Safety, and several traffic violations.
Police hope this video is a sobering example of what can happen if someone chooses to drive under the influence.
"Just drive safe, drive sober, find a ride. This is not anything to joke about. This is definitely something that is concerning to us, and when we saw the video we thought it was something we definitely needed to share with the community to show we are working on trying to keep down in Wisconsin," said Cash.
