"Coast to Coast on a Tandem": Local cyclists write book on cross country trip

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. (WBAY) An Ashwaubenon couple has quite the stories to tell after biking more than 4,000 miles across the U.S. together, on the same bike.

We sat down with the husband and wife who spent the last year writing their adventures into a new book.

"One night I was laying in bed, and I just sat up and looked at Tracy and said, I don't want to wake up someday and wish I had done it and not be able to anymore," says Peter Flucke.

He and his wife, Tracy, decided then and there that biking across America on a bicycle built for two needed to be checked off their bucket list.

"From Bellingham, Washington all the way over to Bar Harbor, Maine took us 72 days. It was 4,362 miles," says Peter.

To say their trek was grueling doesn't begin to describe it.

Tracy got the flu on day two heading into the mountains.

"I just kind of tucked my head down and said we just started this darn trip, I've got to go, so I just did it," says Tracy.

They pedaled through blizzards and thunderstorms, but as the miles passed, they discovered a view few experience.

"You could see the wind move through the wheat fields and create these incredible patterns," recalls Peter. "It was so quiet. You'd see the ducks on the potholes."

"I was laughing because we were going 30 miles an hour and a prairie dog was actually keeping up with him, and I looked at Peter and said, I didn't know they could move that fast!" says Tracy.

Strangers became new friends, and they learned how to eat 7,000 calories a day.

"When I found out my calories were too low, actually my go-to became those four packs of chocolate donuts," says Peter, laughing.

As they rode, Tracy wrote a blog, and with thousands of followers, realized people liked their stories.

A year ago, they sat down to write them into a book, titled "Coast to Coast on a Tandem."

"Even the hard times and us struggling is in there, and that was hard to write," adds Tracy.

The couple makes a living encouraging people to walk and bike and be safe doing it. They hope this book shows people why they're so passionate and offers some inspiration to others.

"It's been fun to watch people go, huh, maybe I'll give that a try. That's what makes us happiest about it," adds Peter.

The Fluckes have a few hundred pages of stories and pictures to share in "Coast to Coast on a Tandem." You can get copies of the book on their website, WeBike.org or wherever books are sold. Click on the link to the right or below for more details.
