Clerks warn GOP primary plan "impossible" to implement
Municipal clerks say Republican plans to move Wisconsin's 2020 presidential primary would create so many headaches it would be impossible to implement.
The primary is scheduled to be part of Wisconsin's spring elections in April 2020. Conservative state Supreme Court Justice Daniel Kelly also will be on the spring ballot.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports GOP lawmakers want to move the presidential primary to March because they fear a Democratic surge in April would hurt Kelly's chances.
Clerks say they would have to process absentee ballots for both elections as well as the February state primary, creating confusion. They say they would need poll workers to work an extra election and buy more memory cards for voting machines. They also warn that multiple elections over three months would confuse voters.
