Born from a fishing tournament, it's a full Walleye Weekend

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (WBAY) - The 40th annual Walleye Weekend festival is underway in Fond du Lac.

The walleye tournament starts Saturday, but the fun has already started.

The crowds are having fun taking part in an activity well-known in Wisconsin: eating fish on a Friday. The big walleye sandwiches were a popular choice.

Other popular choices this weekend include music, Family Land and the Teen Village.

All this was born from a walleye fishing tournament that grew and grew -- and events along the lakeshore grew with it.

Six hundred contestants will take part in the walleye fishing tournament that starts Saturday morning -- one of many things you can watch and do at Lakeside Park this weekend.

"Well over 200 events," festival director Leanne Doyle said, laughing, "Trust me, if you're human, you will find something wonderful to do here!"

Friday evening, the founders of the event were honored. And in place of fireworks this year there will be a show celebrating photos and memories of Walleye Weekend's first 39 years.
