APPLETON, Wis. (WBAY) - Appleton now has a candidate for its next mayor.

Chad Doran became the first announced candidate for next April's election after long-time mayor Tim Hanna said last month he wouldn't seek a seventh term.

Doran has been the city's communications coordinator since 2014 -- a position created by Hanna.

Doran says he's qualified because of his experience working with each part of Appleton's city government as communications coordinator.

"I'm already well-versed in what people are concerned about. They want good, quality roads to drive on. That's no secret. You know everybody in every community complains about those kinds of things because they could always be better, and those are issues that will have to be tackled. We will continue to work on. Innovation is going to be another one of those huge things, with less funding coming into local government every year, budgets get tighter and tighter and you have to be more creative," Doran said.

He also promises to empower city staff to help Appleton grow.

Doran is a Shawano native. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a degree in broadcasting and worked 14 years in journalism as a photojournalist and reporter.
