Antwon Powell enters plea on homicide charge, avoiding trial

BROWN COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) - A 2015 murder case will now not go to trial as the defendant made an 11th hour plea.

Just as jury selection was set to begin Monday afternoon, 31-year-old Antwon Powell took an Alford plea on first-degree reckless homicide.

That means Powell maintains he's innocent but acknowledges a jury would likely find him guilty based on the evidence.

Prosecutors said in December, 2015, Powell shot 32-year-old David Shorter outside of Shorter's Bellevue Street apartment hours after Shorter broke into Powell's home and stole $400 and marijuana.

A criminal complaint also says Powell wanted to hire someone to kill his girlfriend after she gave a statement against him to the police about the shooting.

Powell's trial had been delayed three times. A sentencing date wasn't immediately set.
