GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - Representative Mike Gallagher is under fire by Republicans in Northeast Wisconsin for his decision to vote against impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

The Republican Parties of Oconto and Brown Counties released statements saying they had previously met with Representative Gallagher on the issue of impeaching Mayorkas over his handling of border security.

The Oconto Chair Ken Sikora says that he and many others left that meeting under the assumption there was a consensus and reported to his base that Gallagher had given his word to vote yes on articles of impeachment.

Sikora writes that Gallagher went back on his word and he can no longer, “tolerate or support someone who will not follow his constitutional duties and the wishes of his constituents.”

Action 2 News spoke with the chair of the Brown County Republican Party, Douglas Reich, on Thursday, who says he’s disappointed by Gallagher’s decision on this topic.

“I do wish that he would vote for impeachment, but we also understand that we don’t have to agree on everything, and he does have our full support,” said Reich.

In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Representative Gallagher wrote in part: “Creating a new, lower standard for impeachment, one without any clear limiting principle, won’t secure the border or hold Mr. Biden accountable. It would only pry open the pandora’s box of perpetual impeachment.”
