MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) - Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers scheduled a special election for Rep. John Nygren’s seat in the state Assembly. It will coincide with the state’s spring election on April 6, 2021.

Gov. Evers signed the executive order for the special election Friday.

A primary will be held on February 16, 2021, if one is needed to reduce the number of candidates in the race. Candidates must file their nomination papers by 5:00 P.M. on January 8, 2021.

As Action 2 News reported earlier this week, Nygren is leaving the Assembly to take a job in the private sector as Executive Director of the Wisconsin Association of Health Plans.

Nygren spent 14 years in the Assembly representing the 89th District, which includes parts of Marinette, Oconto and Brown counties. He served as chair of the powerful Joint Committee on Finance, which is responsible for budget writing and state spending.
