WASHINGTON (WBAY) - A freshman congressman from Wisconsin is calling for the resignation of Gov. Tony Evers.

In response to the violence that erupted in Madison late Tuesday night, Rep. Tom Tiffany, a Republican from Minocqua, released a statement saying the governor has ignored what’s happened with protests recently.

He added if the governor cannot “regain control of the streets, he should resign immediately.”

“We’ve all known that the Capitol could be under threat, and the governor did nothing about it,” Tiffany told our Gray D.C. Bureau. “He should have had the National Guard prepared. I mean, you have all those monuments, the state Capitol that’s very prominently... he should have had the National Guard there and prepared.”

Police used pepper spray to prevent protesters from entering the Capitol. Two statutes, including Lady Forward, were pulled down. One was thrown into a lake. A Democratic state senator, Tim Carpenter of Milwaukee, says he was beaten by 8 to 10 protesters while he was taking pictures of the protest.
